Right, for anyone that doesn't know, I'm a shameless fandom whore *waves*
Anyway, I was having a bit of a ponder today when I considered the differing outputs, and general quality of fic from the different fandoms I dabble in. To take three examples;
-Why is it that the Libertines fandom, whilst being really rather tiny, produces such a high standard of fic?
-Why is there so much Torchwood fic? Just what is it that gets so many people writing?
- Why do some shows (eg. The L Word) have bugger all fanfiction, despite being widely watched (probably more so that Torchwood, I'm guessing)
For me, I've always thought that outside of RPS, fiction is partly about correcting what you might perceive as wrongs in the canon, or just fleshing out things that you would have liked to see. But that interpretation leaves me kind of stumped when I apply that to my last example, because S3 of The L Word is a whole series worth of potential 'oh crap what the hell are they doing to these characters?....fanfic!' moments, and no one seems to have lept on that bandwagon. Of course, RPS is a bit of a different kettle of fish (although with Peter and Carl, the 'it shouldn't have gone like that' theory still works to a certain extent) and a think there's a lot of different motivations there.
So, I'm fielding this to you, lovely f-list, as I know a fair few of you are fic writers. What is it that motivates you to write in your fandom? Why do you think that different fandoms draw differing quantities/quality of fiction? Or any related thoughts really, I'm interested in anybody's two cents on any of this :)
